Dear Dr. Goldman:
Although a neighbor of Xerox PARC from its inception, I found
much to interest me in the three days spent with the Review Committee,
and I want to thank you for the opportunity. Here are my main impressions:
1. PARC has collected an outstandingly talented group of
researchers. The average level of talent and initiative seems quite
a bit higher than at IBM's Watson Lab, for example, although that
lab has improved a lot in the last few years.
2. I found the general areas of research well chosen both from the
computer science point of view and from the point of view of
leading eventually to marketable products.
3. The management is not as strong as the researchers as far
as I can see. It doesn't seem to be leading in any particular direction.
4. Perhaps as a result of this, I think there is a substantial
amount of mutual self-deception concerning the probable payoff of some
of the projects.
SYSTEMS SCIENCE LABORATORY
The projects in the Systems Science Laboratory all seem feasible,
and the people there seem capable of carrying them out, but I doubt that
they are optimal either from the scientific point of view or from the
point of view of creating marketable products for Xerox.
